Fort McMurray is an old town in the municipality of Wood Buffalo, about 435 km (270 miles) from the City of Edmonton. This beautiful area is surrounded by boreal forest and is the meeting place of the Athabasca River and the Clearwater River. The climate here is just above subarctic with long, very cold winters and fairly warm, short summers.
The ski resort of Vista Ridge is located near Fort Murray and the season runs from mid-Nov to April. The regular hours of operation are from 9:30AM – 4:00PM on Saturday, Sunday and Holidays, 9:30AM – 3:00Pm on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and. On Friday, the resort is open from noon until 9:00PM and on Tuesday, the hours vary.
Vista Ridge ski area encompasses about 35 skiable acres and it has a day lodge with cafeteria and bar. The summit elevation is 1,230 ft and the vertical drop is about 410 ft with night skiing allowed.
Skiing and snowboarding classes are held throughout the season for skiers of all ages (minimum 3 years) with special classes for women. Private lessons as well as group lessons are offered on nominal charges.
The beginner’s area has two conveyor belt style carpet lifts. Overall, it has five ski trails and four lifts. For terrain park enthusiasts, this park has installed 20 jib features in addition to jumps, boarder, cross tracks, a 20 ft long wall ride and a 10 ft pipe with hits all along its sides.
Furthermore a tube park operates on weekends for those visitors who cannot ski or snowboard.
