Glenshee ski resort, Scotland

This ski resort is located in Cairnwell, Braemar in Aberdeenshire, UK. Glenshee  or “Gleann Shith” means “Glen of the Fairies” in Gaelic language. This resort had its beginnings in the 1930s and is now one of the largest Ski centre in the UK. Glenshee may be reached via airports in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow. This ski resort is spread over an expanse of 4 mountains and 3 valleys on 2,000 acres of land with a base elevation of 2,132 ft. The summit elevation is an amazing 3,504 ft (1068 m) and the vertical drop is 1,500 ft (457 m).

There are 40km of trails for all levels of skiers including 36 runs rated Beginners – 22%, Intermediate – 36%, Advanced – 36% and Expert – 6%. The longest run is called Glas Maol – 2 km in length.

There are 21 lifts in this resort. This includes 2 chairlifts, 16 Pomas and 3 T-bars for a total uphill capacity of 15,460 people per hour. Snowmaking is performed over 20,000 m of land area. Opening hours are 8:30 AM to 5 PM everyday of the week.

Activities in Cairnwell include skiing and snowboarding. This was the venue for the 2000 Scottish Snowboarding championships. Glenshee has a freestyle terrain with natural ¼ pipes and a Half Pipe. There are many courses offered at the snow school here such as Winter Mountaineering, Navigation, Snow and Ice Climbing and Overnight expeditions living in a snow hole or tent. Summer activities include archery, shooting, high ropes challenge, aerial runway, tree climb, rock climbing, abseiling, ropes course, coasteering and mountain biking.
