Abisko ski resort, Sweden

ski hotels

Deep in the northern Swedish wilderness lies Abisko, a truly unique mountain village where an equally unique mountain experience awaits. Forget gaudy après-ski, discotheques, nightclubs and even well-groomed trails. Abisko is about getting out there and experiencing nature for yourself on your own initiative. There is one lift but a whole host of semi-official off-piste trails, to experience either by yourself or with the help of a guide.

The whole idea is to connect with nature and to plan your own descent of the 500 meter vertical fall height that the resort offers. There are daily off-piste guided tours or other information sources to find inspiration of skiing down the mountain. Abisko is one of the best places in Europe to see the northern lights and is well connected by train to the rest of Sweden.

Accommodation is limited to a youth-hostel type hotel, but with own rooms and cabins on offer along with the traditional backpacker type bunk beds. The youth hostel also has a restaurant and bar and was described in The Lonely Planet as “a backpackers delight!” There are also a number of activities like snow shoe walking and ice climbing on offer. Dust off those fat boys and head off up to Abisko!
