Hemsdal ski resort, Norway

ski hotels

Hemsdal is home to arguably the best skiing in Scandinavia its second biggest ski area. In a break from the more traditional cosy and family orientated blueprint that most Scandinavian ski resorts try to adopt, Hemsedal has gone down the more “troubled teenager” route and focused on the terrific piste and off-piste skiing that it has to offer. Hemsedal is split in the middle and has two ski areas; Hemsedal Ski Resort and the much smaller Solheisen Ski Centre in Grøndalen.

There are 24 lifts and 51 slopes in the main village of Hemsedal, with some spectacular black runs plummeting down into the village. However the main advantage from a skiing point of view is the off-piste skiing higher up on the mountain. Here you can safely ski nose deep in fresh powder or find some jumps and drops to get the blood pumping, without the need for a guide or avalanche senders as most off-piste skiing is within sight of a lift. For children and beginners, Hemsedal has Norway's largest children’s ski area with 70 000 m2 of groomed snow. This area has seven slopes and eight lifts. There is also a “Lynxland Minipark” with some small jumps and a free to use barbeque area.

Throughout the small community of Hemsedal there are 6000 commercial beds that include hotels, chalets and apartments. The village boasts two nightclubs and a whole range of bars and restaurants, however nightlife is best described as “limited” as even the hardened skiers aim to make full use of their time out on the slopes.
